It may not be football season yet, but that didn't stop 150 area kids from putting on their helmets and hitting the field.

Topeka is hosting its second Junior Player Development Program at Hummer Park. The two week program is sponsored by the NFL and is intended to help kids build skills both on and off the field.

Organizers say players will learn every position in the game as well as learn life lessons that will help them in school and beyond.

Area middle school coaches, area college players and high school players help run the event. Current and retired professional football players are scheduled to be guest speakers later in the camp.

I am the Site Manager for this event and I am so sorry that your child did not get the information, or that the information didn't make it home. I distributed information regarding this camp to all the 501 schools the Monday after Spring Break. Since you're new to the area, you may also want to watch the newspaper on Tuesdays for community events and on the 501 channel - this event was posted in all of these arenas. I wished that more had been able to participate especially since it is a free camp. I do hope that you're around next year, I would love to have your student participate.

I am neww to the area and this is something my son would have loved to do. He is an avid football fan and played his first season at Jardine Middle School. Where do new people find out about these kinds of things, before they make it in the news as already happening?
