Pro-Evolution Return Could Take Months
Returning to pro-evolution standards could take months. If it does return, it will be the fifth set of science standards in eight years.

Kansas public schools are likely to get their fifth set of science standards in eight years when a new school board is sworn in.

But that action may not happen immediately after moderates take control of the board in January.

Board members and scientists who want to rewrite the current anti-evolution standards say they want to take at least several months to do it. They hope to reconvene a panel of educators whose evolution-friendly work was ignored last year when the board's conservative majority adopted language suggested by intelligent design supporters.

Steve Case is director of the University of Kansas Center for Science Education. He says there is no compelling reason to rush the changes. Case says it's more important to do it right than do it quickly.
