On the very street where a church has welcomed evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, police say a pair of panhandlers tried to profit from the tragedy.

It all happened in the Johnson County town of Prairie Village, a few blocks from the border with Kansas City, Missouri.

Members of Village Presbyterian Church took in 13 people who arrived by charter bus from Houston on Tuesday. A second bus delivered 12 more evacuees Wednesday.

In the same neighborhood, a man and woman posing as homeless Louisianans knocked on doors and stopped motorists to ask for donations. Homeowner Marvin Wilson says the couple had a bag of groceries when they requested, and got, a donation from him.

Contacted by a suspicious driver, police identified the two as Kansas City residents wanted on outstanding drug warrants. They now face a Prairie Village charge of illegal solicitation as well.
