A northeast Kansas animal clinic collects at least ten tons of pet food for animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

The Leavenworth Dog and Cat Clinic is preparing to ship it to a shelter set up for pets in Jackson, Mississippi. After initial plans for a truck fell through, several businesses offered the use of their trucks.

Office manager Barb Settele says the food will first be driven to Kansas City, Missouri, in a truck loaned by a local fruit business, to be stacked and shrink-wrapped. Then it will be hauled to Mississippi on another truck.

They're also trying to find help for a growing number of horses displaced by the storm.

Settele says several other clinics and pet-related businesses in the area are launching pet food drives.
