The numbers are in for the first quarter of 2008. According to the Topeka Police Department crime in the Capitol City is down 23.14%. Executive Officer to the Chief, Ron Brown, says programs like "Lock It, Lose It, or Remove It" have caused Topekans to be more aware and involved.
The biggest decrease was in thefts with 342 fewer thefts in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the first quarter of 2007. Robberies, burglaries, auto thefts, and vehicle break-ins have fallen as well. Arson is the only category that saw an increase in 2 cases.
The TPD says they are going further in their attempts to keep crime down. In May they will start a campaign called Report It, Record It, and Recover It to help take a bite out of residential crime.
