Former Teacher Guilty In Sex Crime Trial Save Email Print

A Reno County jury has found a former high school debate coach and teacher guilty of sex crimes.

The jury found Richard Young guilty of three counts of taking indecent liberties. The verdict was announced after 4:00 p.m. After their verdict, prosecutor Keith Schroeder asked the judge to allow the jury to go back into deliberations in order to decide whether to give the judge permission to sentence Young to more time in prison than state guidelines call for.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the jury came back out and announced that they believe the judge should be allowed to sentence Young to more prison time than he normally would be allowed to do.

Young was accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old foreign exchange student who was staying at his home last year.

Last week, the student testified that Young touched him inappropriately on two occasions. Young's three step-sons also testified for the prosecution that Young abused them hundreds of times when they were younger.

Wednesday, several former students and former exchange students testified in defense of Young.

All of those who testified said Young never did anything inappropriate. Erik Mok who lived with Young for 7 years as an exchange student said Young never did anything inappropriate.

The defense claimed the student who made the allegations against Young made them up.

Well this place wouldn't be a commenting page if we weren't all mean, cruel and harsh.

He was so dedicated to his children that he abused him to what kind of dedication is that.

Explain please--to a former student of Young's--what his three stepsons had to gain by testifying. And, for the record, I was around during said "nasty" divorce. The one person I would say wasn't insane was the ex-wife. Isn't everyone ALWAYS shocked by who it is? Please. I debated for Richard for four years and, after a dozen or so years of experience with abused kids and their abusers, this is the LEAST "shocking" person. I'm so sorry for those three men--they chose to not prosecute, themselves. What courage it took to tell their story, in order to lend veracity to a boy, who was being crucified in the Reno County community. BTW--I got excellent grades from Young and was very successful...this isn't revenge, at all. In fact, my prayers are with him.

No, the information about the divorce did not link to case and therefore was disregarded. I'm sure Richard had his reasons why he did not take the stand. Attn:Justice Served--I'm truly saddened to see this type of backlash from you.I only hope you realize how cruel your comments really are when most of the comments supporting Mr. Young have been ones that display empathy and intelligence--.Attn: Mary Kaiser-Statue of limitations does not apply to this case. His stepchildren were not prosecuting. Jae-Lee was. They were simply testimony. In Kansas, one has three years to date to realize that they were victims of sexual abuse and obtained illness or injury. They can not prosecute him for his alleged mistake 30 years ago. Because of this I see no reason why his jail time should extend 7 years. Again, I pray this ends in the best way possible for Richard. His students will always be eternally grateful for his hard work and dedication.

I do not consider myself to be part of the general public that Jessica was referring to, and of which she obviously belongs to. If she had done a little research herself, she would have found that the "expert" who discovered the porn on his computer had less than 90 days of training and couldn't even define very basic computing terms. He is not someone who many would consider a credible source. Moreover, porn is far from illegal. What a terrible deciding factor.

Unfortunately none of those "weeks of testimonies" were what the jury or the accusers were wanting to hear. Of course there were rumors and slanted comments taken into consideration, thanks to his ex-wife, she was able to bring about all those rumors and comments that ended up being what the jury based their decision off of. Not because of Jae Lee, but because of his mistake thirty years ago yet where does the statute of limitations come into play here? Attn Justice Served: Nice pun. I hope you slept well after you thought of that.

RESPONSE TO SHOCKED AND SADDENED: Did the jury not know about the so-called messy divorce, insane ex-wife and the lies she supposedly fed her children for years, because - - a) Richard Young failed to present that evidence [like he failed to use his superior pursuasive speaking skills to testify at trial] or b) your comments are grossly inaccurate and unable to be proven???

We will continue to pray for Richard. The jury may not have known about the messy divorce, the insane ex-wife, and the lies she fed her children for years, but friends and family will continue to lift your name. Thank you for all that you have done in the lives of debaters everywhere. Thank you for your hard work.

If I remember correctly, wasn't it reported that young Asian porn was found on this man's computer? That certainly doesn't seem too innocent to me! I'm sure there is a lot that went on during the trial that isn't reported. I'm sure the jury is much more educated about this case than the public and I'm thankful they made an educated decision in this case.

To Reporter Miss Farris: You should say Richard Farris was found guilty, NOT is guilty.

Richard Young participated in the selection of the jury members who heard the case and decided his guilt. The jurors were from the community. They heard weeks of testimony and evidence - - not just rumors and slanted comments. Richard Young presented many witnesses who attacked the mental balance of the kid and claim that Young was an innocent man who couldn't possibly do the horrible things being claimed. Well - - guess what? - - the jury didn't buy his defense. Get on with it Mary Kaiser. Richard Young affected a lot of people's lives in a positive way. He's now been convicted in open court of touching on foreign exchange student in a different type of way.

I hope the family of the foreign exchange student is happy that their son has ruined an innocent mans life due to the lack of acceptance that their son is highly dysfunctional.

I hope the family of the foreign student will follow up by suing Face the World, the educational & cultural exchange program.
