A motorcycle rider is improving after hitting a deer in South Sedgwick County.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. at 6600 S. Hoover, just west of Haysville.

The motorcycle was traveling at a fairly high rate of speed when it hit the deer. The impact caused 28-year-old Adam Gonsalves to roll 30 to 40 feet. He was wearing a helmet.

Gonsalves went to the hospital in critical condition, but has been upgraded to good condition.

Adam says he was going 130 mph when he hit the deer.... Not really the deer's fault.

Being a biker myself I have seen far too many times the hazards of deer running out in front of you. My boyfriend Chris laid in a coma for 7 weeks becuase a deer ran in front of his bike, flipped him, and then he was run over by a semi on Kellogg back in June of 95. He was doing every thing right, even wearing a full face helmet, but that was what posed the problem. The helmet blocked part of his parifial vision, and he didn't see the deer until it was too late. You can't just slam on the breaks and swerve on a bike like you can in a car or truck. When riding after dark I always scan the ditches and roadside about a half mile ahead of me for eyes & yet more than once I have had a critter jump out of the bushes at the last minute. I pray this fellow rider will be okay & hope those of you who aren't riders will realize that things like this happen regardless of your actions. :-)

Shouldnt that be upgraded in status from serious to critical. Also the other station stated this patient was a male?

It is not just cars who need to pay attention! Motorcycle drivers are responsible for their own safety, now start driving like it!!

Perhaps the state should loosen the seasons for deer hunting. there are lots of accidents in the state. also lots of dead deer along the roads. I always follow a car or truck on my bike so they can "filter" the deer.
