If you want to pass the ocean, single hinge, swing on through and extend, then Wichita is the right place for you this week. Thousands will be do-si-do'ing their way into town for the National Square Dance Convention.
"Just seeing everyone going through their intricate motions was really fun," explained Maureen Hofrenning, with the Wichita Convention and Visitors' Bureau.
"There are about 50 calls to learn and circle left and circle right are the first two," said Justin Russell, a caller from Memphis, who by the way is just 19 years-old.
For 57 years, square dancers have picked a city and do-si-doed the week away. This week, nearly 7,000 people from around the world will twirl their way around Wichita.
"This has been four years in the planning so there's been an amazing amount of work both on the part of the local committee and the other people within the city," said Hofrenning.
With 8 countries partnered up, the convention is expected to bring more than $2,000,000 to the city. At least 21 hotels are packed and some dancers will set up camp in RV parks. Even restaurants have been notified to be stocked and ready.
"This is certainly the biggest convention that will be in town this year," said Hofrenning.
Most dancers aren't expected until Wednesday, but callers got into town early to dust off the mics.
"I've been calling for about 6 years now," said Russell.
Dancers will fill downtown with Barbecues, parades, dancing in the streets and catching up with friends.
"We band together at the convention and I have friends from all over the place coming in," said Russell.
"Seeing the commitment and passion of the square dancers, especially the Kansas Local Chapters," says Hofrenning. "They are the ones who have really made this work."
