A local teacher has been named the "National Physical Education Teacher of the Year".

Kathy Wagner won the award for her work with Pre-K and Kindergarten kids at Collegiate School in East Wichita. She says teaching P.E. to kids as young as 3-years old is vital in the fight against childhood obesity.

"It is absolutely imperative in our society to educate young children about taking care of themselves, living life full of healthy choices," Wagner said.

Wagner will testify before Congress next month about the importance of keeping physical education in schools.

childrens lifestyles are not just the responsibility of teachers...yes they do have them a lot of the time and have a big influence on them, but what happened to parenting. what happens at home...babysitters so mom and dad can go out..television watching, game playing etc., etc., parents have become lazy at the responsibility they have. most of the time both parents have to work to attain the lifestyle the parents want, but alot of the time it is to the detriment of our children. thank you

Kathy, A Job Well Done. Shame on whoever is trying to get P.E. out of schools. Without Teachers in Physical Education, all of our kids would turn out to be "Couch Potatoes". Is this really what we as parents want for our children? Did you know that this generation will not outlive their parents? Scary thought, let's get back to the BASICS and teach our kids that P.E. is necessary, not optional. Keep up the Great Work Kathy!
