The El Dorado Police Department has launched a program called Buckle Up Butler in an effort to promote safety belt usage among young drivers. After five months, students at the high school with the highest percentage of seat belt use would be in the running for a new ride.
Jessica Martin posed for pictures Friday in front of her new car. "I was frozen," she said. "So shocked I couldn't say anything."
The Douglass High School student won the ride because her school had the best buckle up percentage in the Buckle Up Butler contest.
The contest is pretty simple. Ten public schools in Butler County participate. It begins when school starts.
"An officer goes out and does a survey. Then we give them promotional material," says Kurt Spivey. "Then we do a second survey. The school that has the best percentage is the winning school. Then a student from the school gets to win a car."
Names from the winning school go into a hat. After a drawing, a student wins a car from Fenton Motors. This is the fourth year for the program, and Spivey says it's working.
"Every year we have done this there has been a growth," he says. "We have never had a decline."
