Officers find themselves in a close call last night, after they were forced to open fire on some runaway suspects.

At about 10:30 p.m., a pair of officers tried to stop a vehicle on a traffic violation when it ran off.

Wichita Police Lt. Joe Schroeder said the officers were able to stop the vehicle again near Martinson and Walker.

But when the officers approached the men inside, the suspects started their vehicle again and nearly ran over the police officers, hitting the police cruiser twice and knocking down a stop sign.

Schroeder said the men feared for their lives and shot at the men as they drove off. No one was hit by the rounds, and the officers followed pursuit in their police cruiser again.

The officers stopped the men three minutes later at Glenn and McCormick. Both men were arrested, but the passenger fought back. Officers tased the man and took him to a Wichita hospital for evaluation.

None of the suspects were seriously hurt. No officers were injured during the altercation.

People should realize laws are put in place for a reason. Maybe if they would of shot them, the next one would not think it is such a good idea.

It is said they missed, I bet they still won't stop. They will get probation and on the streets doing the same in a matter of weeks. If they would of ran over one of your children trying to run from the police your opinion would be different.

I think we need to re-evaluate when it is acceptable to discharge one's firearm in the city's residential neighborhoods, cop or not in my opinion that was pretty wreckless!!!

I live right around the corner from where the shots were fiered. If my memory serves me right there were only two shots fiered, and if thats what the officer felt he had to do to stop the suspect than by all means. The suspects put our neighboorhood in danger, God forbid it would have been in the day when my children are out to play

the charge is called attempted murder of a police officer whenthey think someone tried to run over them. the bullets had to go somewhere, shooting in the city is little hazardous to everyone, regardless of who shoots.

why is it "attempted murder of a police officer" when someone trys to run over a cop, but perfectly acceptable when someone kills a guy on a motorcycle? Where did the article say "attempted murder"??
