A Newton man has died after an accident earlier this week.

45-year-old Timothy Mescher crashed his motorcycle on Wednesday, entering a ditch and flipping several times. He was taken to a Wichita hospital where he died Friday.

He is the sixth person to die this week from a motorcycle accident.

On Monday, at 45th St. N. and Oliver near Bel Aire, a man died when he lost control of his bike and slid into an oncoming minivan.

Tuesday, officers running radar attempted to stop a speeding motorcycle. The driver sped off and stuck a curb. 35-year-old Brandy Spencer died at the scene of the accident. Her husband, 32-year-old William Spencer died at the hospital later the same night.

Wednesday, 47-year-old Duane Cool of El Dorado was killed when strong winds may have caused him to lose control of his bike at Old 254 and Ohio St. just east of Towanda.

Thursday, 55-year-old Robert Crandall struck a deer while riding his motorcycle on Pretty Prairie Rd in Reno County. He died the next day at a Wichita hospital.

Even though all of these deaths were tragic. Lets be serious only 2 of them died because of an accident, the others made there choices known by the outcome of what they did. I'm an avid rider and it is my choice whether or not to where a Helmet. I don't need to waste the legisltures time on things like this. They have lots of donuts to eat and coffee to drink!

What about the motorcycle crash Wednesday that left Rick Williams in critical condition?

Most of you people that leave comments are really rude and preachy.

Go, while I'll agree the motorcyclists who died because they didn't wear a helmet weren't the smartest, I can't agree with you that they should have to. Whether they wear one or don't - whether they live or die - it doesn't really affect you, or anyone other than the motorcyclist. It's their decision, and I support their right to risk their own life. Who are YOU to tell them what to do with it? Should we create a law that says "Go in Derby must use a wrist pad while leaving comments on kake.com stories so as to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome"? It's not our place, and telling a motorcyclist to wear a helmet ISN'T YOURS!

Common sense, not helmets or seat belts. Need I say more.

Come on people. Stop and think about what your saying. A license is not a sure that you won't have an accident. I have a drivers license and i could have an accident. I wear a seatbelt and i could have an accident.I agree with Ann. For those of you who think you know everything shut up.

helmets on any of the deaths?? Seems to me if we have to wear a seatbelt--motorcyclists should have to wear a helmet--and if none of them were wearing helmets well they were just plain stupid!

Were any of them licensed to ride a motorcycle? Not wearng a helmet isn't against the law, but riding without the motorcycle endorsement is.

Ya know in some cases helmets save lives but not in all cases the same for seat belts, if you dont know the whole situation dont judge, tragic accidents happen; familes & friends lose loved ones. PEOPLE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION ON BIKES & IN CARS! STAY OFF CELL PHNS & DRIVE THAT WILL SAVE MORE LIFES THAN A HELMET OR BELT EVER WILL!
