The tornado that ripped through El Dorado on June 10th, 1958, is being remembered at the Butler County Educational center.

Nearly 50 years after the twister roared through the unsuspecting town, museum educational curator Lisa Cooley and her team are opening an exhibition called "Two Minutes in Terror" remembering and honoring those who suffered through the powerful 1958 twister.

Pictures, sounds, news clips, recovered artifacts, and personal accounts from the day of the deadly storm fill the exhibition hall. It's a day those who suffered and survived say they will always remember, but they say it's a day they fear the rest of Kansas has already forgotten.

Cooley says, without this exhibit, this day in history could be forgotten. But she says that's why they're doing this ... to ensure this important piece of history won't ever be forgotten.

The free event is open May 1st through October 4th at the Butler County Education Center Monday through Saturday. The dedication of the tornado memorial will be on the 50 year anniversary, June 10th, 2008.

I was 10 years old at the time, and dad came in late from the lake, skiing. Mother had supper steaming on the table, and when dad pulled in the driveway, she told him to put the car in the garage, it is going to storm. He had never done this before, thru past storms, but for some strange reason he did,and when he looked out the west window of the garage, he saw the tornado coming about a half mile away. He backed the car out of the garage, and I remember him opening the door and standing there, and telling my mother, "Berniece, get the kids in the car, we are going to have to run out to your mothers,(grandma banks on a farm east of El Dorado). Mother had to shut all the windows, turn off the air conditioner, turn off the stove, when dad said in a stern voice," GET THE KIDS IN THE CAR NOOOOOW, WE HAVE TO GO". By the time we backed out of the drive way, which had a big letter "k" layed in rock, the tornado was only three blocks away, and the car was shaking.

My cousin and I were the first to see that tornado coming. We were on Topeka Street just about a mile from the El Dorado Refrinery.

That is the problem, when these tornados hit, no one is expecting which is why they are so bad. here in Eurkea, everyone is talking about how we cant get it, but if we do, no one will be ready for it which could be very bad.
