An Army veteran who lost his life in a motorcycle crash two months ago was remembered Sunday in Wichita through a benefit car show.

Hundreds of friends and car lovers gathered to raise money for Chris Burkes' family and also to spread the message of motorcycle awareness and safety.

"If this was somebody else's situation, he would be right there asking, 'What can I do?'" said Ilia Burkes, Chris's widow.

Burkes was a soldier, a husband and a friend who had a passion for anything with an engine. He was a member of a custom car club and had recently joined the Patriot Guard.

"He was just a good, clean cut, All American kid," said Jim Kelly, a member of the Patriot Guard and a friend of Chris's.

On February 9th, Burkes, who was a motorcycle awareness advocate, was killed on his motorcycle at Harry and Seneca. He was wearing his motorcycle awareness shirt.

"This was an accident that shouldn't have happened," said Kathy Willson, a friend of Burkes.

"He was always very safe, very careful. He paid attention to what was going on around him," said Ilia.

On what would have been his 34th birthday on Sunday, Burkes' friends carried on his message and helped out his family in a way they said was fitting... A car show.

"It would mean the world to him, just knowing that I'm okay and the support that everyone is showing would mean a lot to him," explains Ilia.

Kathy Willson grew up with Burkes and helped organize the show and auction.

"There are just some loose ends we need to tie up for his family," said Willson.

"Ilia is just in awe of the turnout today," said Kelly.

But it's also an effort to raise awareness about cars and motorcycles sharing the road.

"People just have to pay attention, get off the phone, stop playing with the radio. Pay attention and things like this won't happen," said Ilia.

Rick, my comment questions how motorcycle accidents are blown off by the police. very seldom is anything said about fines or tickets for motorists who pull out in front of motorcycists. Possibly if the police were as concensious about bad drivers as they are about getting high school kids to buckle up, and the mesw media reported it, drivers would be reminded about watching for motorcycles. instead of just concentrating on helmets.

Maybe if KSN would report events like this the day before they happened then more people would attend and more money could be raised. As oppossed to reporting it the day after. But instead they are more focused on stories about what goes on in other cities and states. And on the subject of "idiots" I am an avid bicyclist. I wear my helmet and ride defensively. However I see idiots in cars, trucks on motorcycles and on bicycles. No matter how we choose to get from point a to point b we need to drive defensively and be prepared to incounter one who is too stupid to do the same. The next time one of you motorcyclists decide to attempt to intimidate a bicyclist by swerving at him think about how you would feel if an automobile driver did that to you in a 4,000 pound vehicle.

Well, Cliff, your comment begs the question, "Was Burkes wearing a helmet?" Or is motorcycle safety awareness ONLY for the other guy? Because there ARE so many "idiots" who pull or turn in front of motorcyclists, doesn't that make the motorcyclist who doesn't take every safety precaution an idiot as well?

perhaps if the police would target these automotive killers, the death toll would go down. how many times in the last years would the news media scream "HE WASNT WEARING A HELMET" and ignore the fact that the idiot that pulled out in front or turned in front of a motorcycle rider didnt even get a ticket.
