The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the four high school girls who died Thursday morning in a tragic car accident.

17-year-olds Victoria Dowell, Julia Alcala, Veronica McDaniel and 16-year-old Myranda Mason were killed in the accident. The driver of the car, 17-year-old Jennifer Longfellow was injured in the crash and was flown to an Amarillo, Tex. hospital.

The Ulysses police chief said that four high school students were killed Thursday afternoon after their car was struck by an 18-wheeler at the intersection of Highway 160 and Stubbs Rd.

The accident happened three minutes before noon, according to the chief. Ulysses High School has an open lunch policy.

The police chief said Longfellow's car stopped at the intersection, but then proceeded across the highway into the path of the semi.

He said the car was struck on the passenger side and spun around into a ditch. The semi appeared to have been eastbound.

"They were very typical high school sophomore girls," said Ulysses High School Principal Rodger Hilton. "They were full of life and vitality. Two of them were on the softball team and another was a cheerleader."

Thursday's girls softball game was canceled and a prayer vigil was planned at a local church. Meanwhile, Hilton said school will resume on Friday with grief counselors on hand.

"The best advise is for parents to encourage their kids to return to normal activities as quickly as possible," Hilton says. "That includes returning to school tomorrow. It's going to be toughest day, but each day after will get better and better."

Ulysses is a town of about 5,600 people about 60 miles west of Dodge City.

I wish that you would correct the ages of the girls at Ulysess, that were killed. 1 was 15, and 4 of them were 16 yrs. old. It makes a big difference in the bill at Topeka, Thank you.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE PATRIOT GUARD!!!! Thanks to the Patriot Guard, the families and friends of the four girls lost were shielded from the deranged antics of those crackpots from the WBC in Topeka that showed up at the Memorial service Monday evening. Again thank you!

ulysses is in mulvane's thoughts and prayers. i am a senior at MHS and we have had our share of losses and you showed your support through that, now we will return the support. you will be in our hearts!

Although the loss of these girls was a tragic incident what I cannot and donot understand is why such a small town community sees fit to start all the rumors. What happen to these girls was an eye opener to many including myself but it is not my place to judge. The Lord has done that. For those who truly new Him as their Lord and Saviour I thank God today as I have everyday since that they new Him personally. For those that didn't I pray for the community to come together and teach our young ones about Gods saving grace so that there is never another question. For all the support for these girls and their families and the prayers for them and the truck driver as well. These are all very appreciated by the community of Ulysses

anybody who thinks that courtney was faking it should get their information straight! She has been best friends with Tori since 4th grade! Julia and Tori were part of our softball team and i dont think that you guys should be worrying about it! I was a good friend of those two as well! My heart goes out to all the families!

our prayers are with all the families tonight. our heart is so burden for the loss of tori. she was our neighbor and playmate of my children for 5 yrs. she will never be missed. my daughter has open lunch in texas and i am so opposed because our town has alot more traffic than ulysses. it is a concern for me all the time at noon here. my heart goes out to all and i pray that you can find strength through God, friends and family. tori, you could set up a mean lemonade stand! we love you!

No matter what part of the world it happens in, it's always heartbreaking when children lose their lives. It happened close to home this time and that makes it tougher. I pray the good Lord wraps his arms around the the family members of those girls and brings them peace and comfort as they deal with this. I also pray for the truck driver. He's got to live with this too. If I were in his shoes, I don't know if I could handle it. May the Lord also comfort him and bless him with the strength and confidence to overcome this and continue with his life.

Posted by: Tori on Mar 30, 2008 at 10:18 PM
To all the families and friends and to the community involved in this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. God has a special plan for each of the girls that has passed. And hope you can find a sense of peace in that. As far as the truck drive, I am so sorry that you had to go through this. It is horrific and something that will never go away that will remain with you for life. And for that may god help you, find peace for you as well. As far as the jennifer, may the angels surround you and help you fight the biggest battle of your life. For physically and mentally, it will be a challenge. Don't give a blame, understand and help eachother move on. Pull together, not apart.

My brother is a sophmore there in UHS and knew the girls. It breaks my heart to hear about this tragedy. It really is hard to believe that they are gone.I hope and pray that Jennifer pulls through ok.And I agree the speed limit needs to go down.My prayers are with the family, friends, students and the community.

Micky maybe it wasnt the same 17 years ago now teenagers are more outgoing than before. I think all the students should stay in school for lunch. Its for their own safety. I live here in Ulysses and when its lunch time for the high school kids I dont even want to drive by the school because it gets crazy. We all know this accident could of happened at another time but it didnt. Before I asked what Courtney had said and im sorry I did. It is true that she was upset and that I dont think she meant to say it like that. God be with the parents of the four girls that passed away and pray for Jennifer.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Mississippi on Mar 30, 2008 at 06:23 PM
Well, over half the town of Ulysses is related to me one way or another. I didn't know the girls, but i know some of the people they were friends with and my mom and dad know a few of their parents. I heard about it and my heart ached. I've been there so many times, and i just can't believe that something like this could happen to such a small community. Just like when the tornado hit Greensburg, KS last year. Its horrible and all of my prayers are with the families and friends.

Posted by: Micky Location: Weatherford, Texas on Mar 30, 2008 at 12:55 PM
First and foremost, My thoughts and prayers are with the families, students, and the entire community. I graduated from Ulysses High School in 1991. I don't recall any accidents during the Lunch Hour. It was open then too. I say shame on those that bring up this political issue. This could have happened if they were simply going to golf practice, which the intersection where it occurred is where you turn to go to the golf course. Sad days ahead in Ulysses. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We all realize now that we never kno when somethin can happen 2 any of us we pray that such a horrible tragedy like this one will never happen again.. Losing a friend our a loved one in such a horrible accident is hard for anyone to go thru it's the harest thing any parent would ever go thru is losing a child, all of us in liberal share the prayers for these 4 girls even tho us high schoolers didnt kno them maybe some have, but we all pray for the families n friends of these 4 girls who lost there lives...may u all rest in peace

PEOPLE...COME ON. 4 girls have lost their life. This is not the time to pick on Courtney! I saw what she said and she obviously was upset - wouldn't you be? It came out the wrong way - haven't you ever done that? Of course - we all have. I feel sorry for anyone that would focus on those comments at a time like this. What kind of a person would do that? Forget being ashamed of KAKE - you should be ashamed of yourself. It definately is not a kind and Christian way to behave.

With the support of the community, family, and friends Ulysses and the victims families will cope with this. My heart and soul goes out to this town and to the injured survivor. God Bless! Revelation 21:2,3

i am so sorry for your loss. i'm a senior at mulvane high school, and we lost a girl in my class at the begining of the year. it absolutley broke my heart to hear about this. our school has suffered the lost of 4 people over a year, but i cant imagine losing 4 people at once. i know its hard, but just know that those girls love each and everyone of you and will forever be looking over you. your school will pull together and you will get through it together. although you dont think so now, one day you will be able to talk about those girls and rejoice about their lives, instead of mourn. i hope this has helped, and i wish you all the best of luck. with love.

Dana, my prayers are with you and your entire family, Jennifer & her family, and the truck driver. May God lift you up and give you the strength to get through this.

We in Kearny county have experienced a loss in the recent years of two students, we learned as a community to pull together, and grieve. The loss of life is unbearable, and the guilt and remoress, of those left to survive such a tragedy will go on for a lifetime. Our hearts go out to all involved, may god be with you all.

My prayers are with the families of these 4 girls and also with Jennifer.I also pray for the semi driver. He looked really sad when I seen him at the accident scene. It wasnt his fault but he must feel guilt anyways.Only god knows why things like this have to happen. I have three kids and I know they are they are mine but I also know that god can take them away when ever he wants.I was in an accident when I was in 8th grade and I guess god didnt need me yet and he gave me another chance to change my life.I heard Jennifer is coming home on Monday is it true. What are Jessica and Kim talking about? What did Courtney Anthony say? I didnt see that when it was aired. But whatever it was it must of been really bad trash talk.

Posted by: George Location: Hutchinson on Mar 29, 2008 at 01:20 AM
I agree with many many others. Very horrible accident. Prayers are with all the families of these girls. But as mentioned in a couple of these comments. I drive a Semi. theses trucks empty or full can not stop on a dime. And the age of teen age drivers needs to be raised. I understand the age of a driver may be getting younger. I hope the governor or whoever is in charge of changing these laws use this moment as an example not to. Again prayers are with all.

As I write this with such a heavy heart, it saddens me to see families that must endure a tragedy of an untimely death of a loved one, that I also was faced with a few short months ago. First and foremost, my condolences go out to the family and friends of these fine young ladies. May you trust in the Lord and please know that God will give you strength, as hard and as unbearable as the pain may seem. I also pray for the truck driver, Mr. Sauer, knowing that he must be carrying a lot of pain in this loss. Blessings.

I agree that kake should not have aired the interview with Courtney, however it was very clear that that girl was hurting and at the verge of tears. I dont know her but I am sure that what she was trying to say just did not come out right. She was not trying to be hurtful in any way.

Our hearts have hurt all day for the families and friends of the 4 girls lost in this horrible accident. I can't even begin to understand how it would feel to lose someone that you love as dearly as your own child. Sgt. I am the mother of 3 young daughters. This story broke my heart. I was also in an accident when I was 16, though not this tragic. I pray for the girls lost and their families, but mostly for the young lady still here, and the semi driver who will both have to remember this. may this tragic event not be forgotten in a week or a month, may everyone that reads these entry's or hears of them, set down your differences. Set aside your anger and hatred and destructive feeling. Anyone in our lives can be taken in an instant, a blink of an eye. May we all be grateful and appreciative of those that we have in our lives, those that are around us, for we are all related, we are all one. may these dividing lines be dropped by the wayside and may we love everyone around us as we love our family. to parents, pls remember that "those that are the hardest to love are those that need to be loved the most" this is an opportunity for our community, lets not waste it. we love you all. may creator wrap his loving arms around these girls as he takes them home.

This tragedy is another example of why we need to take these moving weapons out of the hands of teenagers. They don't have the maturity to really grasp the fact that they are in a 2,000 pound moving vehicle, not sitting in their living rooms. Teenagers need a little bit more time to mature before being entrusted with this responsibility. I realize that there are mature, responsible teenagers out there but unfortunately teenagers in general tend to make rash decisions and become distracted when around their friends. My thoughts and prayers go to the families of these girls. God be with you.

This hit me hard, even though I don't know the girls it brings back all of our horrible losses.. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and the whole community for what has happened! We all are thinking of you!

I just feel sick, things like this are just so difficult to comprehend. May God show you his infinite compassion and mercy. You are in our thoughts and prayers, the families, the community and anybody who is effected by this tragedy. I remember teaching at Oskaloosa, KS when two students were killed in an auto accident. After hearing of this accident in Ulysses, I had to research to find out when it had happened. Ironically - it happened on 9/11/01. I couldn't believe it had been over 6 years ago. Bottom line - your pain will be eased, your life will go on, then something will happen so that the memory of these friends will return. Please cherish the blessing of memories of all those good times.

As a part of this community I must say that, We are all here for each other. As friends, families, and love ones ,there is always a shoulder to lean on. These girls are all in a better place and may they rest in peace. But as the parent of a teenage student myself- it doesn't do any good to condem these young kids (cause they'll do it anyway) Just be there for them. Be the parent but also be their best friend. Life is to short to let them slip through your fingers.

This is another horrible loss. I was a senior at CHS when we lost 3 girls in a car wreck and several other students and staff to wrecks and other horrible accidents. My heart goes out to everyone at that school because i really do know what your going through and i wouldnt wish it on even my worst enemy.

Kansas is very saddend today. I feel for the families, friends and everyone touched by this. And agreed, it is equally important to remember the truck driver as well - he or she will live with this tragedy and be in need of support likewise.

I have nnot heard names but it does not matter. I still find myself thinking and praying for the students and families. In 1999-2000 I was a school nurse there. These girls would've been 2nd graders. We have no guarantees and never know what a difference a day can make.

I am so saddened to hear about this tragic accident. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of each of these girls. I can't begin to imagine the impact that will be felt throughout your community in the days to come. As a mother of two teens this is a somber reminder of just how precious every moment of life truly is. Although I do not know their names or their life stories, I am certian each and every one has made a difference in someone elses life. My thoughts and prayers for peace and acceptance are with you all today and in the difficult days to come as you grieve and heal.

I AM PRAYING FOR THE LOVED ONES OF ALL WHO WERE IN THE ACCIDENT. IT SADDENS ME TO SEE THAT SOMEONE SO YOUNG HAD THEIR LIVES AHEAD OF THEM AND NOW THEY'RE GONE. ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T PERSONALLY KNOW THE GIRLS, I KNOW OF THEM AND THEIR FAMILES. MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH THEM IN THIS DIFFICULT AND SAD TIME. THE COMMUNITY IS GREATLY AFFECTED BY THIS, AND IS A HUGE EYE OPENER. THIS IS A VERY VERY SAD DAY FOR MANY.
