Three people were killed in car crashes in Southern Kansas Saturday evening.
Just before 8:00 p-m, emergency crews were called to the intersection of 87th Street South and 263rd Street West in Western Sedgwick County. When they arrived, they found a wrecked car that was flipped over. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency dispatchers say there were no other injuries.
Sheriff Sergeant Jason Gill says the driver, 63 year-old Gerald Eck of Harper County, was killed when he was thrown out of his vehicle. It struck the bridge guardrail and rolled over.
Another person was killed near Augusta when Sheriff Craig Murphy says Michelle Mendoza, 47, lost control on the Highway 77 bridge over the Walnut River. Murphy says a her car was struck head-on by a pickup when she crossed the center line on the slushy bridge. Mendoza was a Spanish teacher at Andover.
The third deadly accident happened in Allen County just after 8:00 p-m when the driver lost control on Highway 54 just east of Moran. 32 year-old Leah Barnum of Iola was killed when she lost control and rolled into a ditch. A 12 year-old girl was also slightly hurt in that crash, but is expected to recover.
Many other less-serious crashes happened as a light blanket of snow caused roadways to become slushy:
I-235 in South Wichita was shut down for about an hour after a driver lost control near the Macarthur Road exit. Troopers say it's amazing nobody was hurt in that mishap because the van went off the roadway, slid down the bridge embankment, and then struck the abutment on Macarthur. Train traffic on the nearby tracks was also shut down as a precaution, because the vehicle burst into flames near the tracks.
Another driver lost control on the Kansas Turnpike and ended up upside down in a drainage ditch south of Kellogg and Greenwich Rd. That driver also escaped injury.
And Woodlawn was blocked near K-96 Saturday night when one person was seriously hurt there. That victim is expected to recover.
