A 5-year-old Sterling girl is in intensive care at Wesley Medical Center after contracting the HUS strand of the E. Coli bacteria. Aubrey Anderson began to show flu-like symptoms on Sunday and was transferred to Wesley Medical Center on Monday after her condition worsened.

Neither doctors nor her parents are certain where the bacteria may have been contracted but it could have been weeks before she showed any signs of illness.

The HUS strand of E. Coli attacks the kidneys. Doctors hope Aubrey can make a full recovery, but say it could take from 3 to 6 weeks, or even longer.

Bill and Karen Anderson, Aubrey's parents, say the show of support from surrounding communities has been overwhelming. They tell us their daughter smiled for the first time on Wednesday and it was the first day her condition improved.

My prayers go out to you. I lost my mother to E-coli 0157H7 July 20, 2006. The worst part is what you are experiencing now - a child having to go thru it. My son did get contaminated by his Grandma. We never found out how my mother got it and it wasn't for a month after that we discovered how my son got it. It is a parents worst nightmare.I don't feel that the public is aware of how true it is that this can happen in Kansas. The E-coli was in my son's system for 1 month. I thought it would never go away. Have faith in the Lord and be sure to take care of yourselves. My mother and son's incident with E-coli was never made public. I would have liked it to have. Aubrey is a beautiful girl. I pray for her recovery and hope that the public will be come more aware of how easy your loved ones can get E-coli and how serious it is.
