Supporters Testify On Kansas Union PAC Bill

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Supporters of a proposed bill to end the practice of allowing Kansas government units to automatically deduct contributions to their political action committees say the measure is constitutional.

Several representatives from business interests and attorneys told the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday that the measure would not limit the rights of unions or their members to participate in the political process. The issue, they say, is why the government should have any role in the process.

However, Senate President Susan Wagle says she's concerned about a new definition of political activity in the bill, which she says may have cost a few votes of support when it was passed in the House.

The committee took no action on the bill after the hearing.
