State Board Of Education Welcomes New Members

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Four new State Board of Education members took their seats.

A reception was held for them Tuesday morning before their first meeting.

Republicans Kathy Busch, Jim McNiece, Deena Horst and Steve Roberts are the newcomers, while Democrat Carolyn Campbell of Topeka took the oath for her second term.

Members selected Jana Shaver as board chairperson.

Like lawmakers, board members disagree whether schools get enough money. A district court ruled Friday that current funding allotted by lawmakers didn't meet constitutional requirements.

Campbell says she agrees with the ruling, noting that many districts have had to cut after school, tutoring and other programs due to lack of funding. Roberts isn't as convinced, saying someone will complain no matter what is done. He says he believes fixing some flaws will result in more money for everyone.

Approving new history and science standards are also important business items for the board in the upcoming year.
