TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - State education officials want state lawmakers to get a better understanding of their goals for Kansas kids.

Board of Education members met Wednesday with lawmakers on the House and Senate education committees. Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker outlined the board's role and its goals for schools. Those include providing early childhood opportunities and having effective educators in all classrooms.

The discussion comes as the Kansas Supreme Court considers a lawsuit over how much money schools get. It's a question on which lawmakers have differing views.

Rep. Valdenia Winn, D-Kansas City, says she believes cost analysis has clearly shown the legislature has not funded what is needed. Instead, she says, the body has approved other choices, like tax cuts.

Rep. Shanti Gandhi, R-Topeka, says it's difficult to say whether schools need more money. He says both sides of the argument provide different figures. However, he says lawmakers to have a responsibility to fund certain things.

The Court's ruling is expected in December. The legislative session begins in January.
