Kansas House Rep. Bideau Dies At Home

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ House Speaker Ray Merrick's office says southeast Kansas Rep. Ed Bideau has died at his home in Chanute a day after the Legislature ended a two-day special session.

Rachel Witten, spokeswoman for the speaker, says Friday that the 62-year-old Bideau died Thursday. She says his wife told the Speaker's Office a heart attack is suspected.

Funeral services were not available Friday.

Bideau was an attorney in Chanute and was elected to the House in 2012. He previously served in the House from 1985 to 1988 before leaving office to establish his law practice.

According to his official campaign website, Bideau graduated from Chanute High School and Neosho County Community College. He earned business and law degrees from Washburn University in Topeka.

He was elected county attorney in Neosho County in 1976.

“We were greatly saddened today to learn of the death of Representative Ed Bideau. Ed was a fifth generation Kansan who was committed to the people of this state, to his family and to his faith. The Lt. Governor and I extend our sincere condolences to his wife Margaret, his children and grandchildren. We offer our prayers to the entire Bideau family and Ed’s many friends.”

In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down through the date of Representative Bideau’s internment.

From House Speaker Ray Merrick:
“Ed was a kind, humble, intelligent man. He loved his family dearly and was committed to serving his friends and neighbors in the 9th District. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues in the legislature.”

A Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday September 9th at First Presbyterian Church in Chanute. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10th at the church.
