Bill Bunten Bids Farewell To Serving Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__From a Topeka High School Basketball team that placed third in the state, to earning the rank of captain in the Marines, and from the Statehouse to City Hall, Bunten dedicated many years to serving Topeka.

Tuesday April 9th will mark the end of bill buntens 38 years in elected office.

At a time where topeka is pushing to keep businesses and young talent here in the capital city...

Mayor bunten has remained loyal for the majority of his 83 years....

"We grew up in Topeka, I went to grade school in Topeka and then Topeka High, and then on to KU," said Bunten.

Like many men in the 1950's after graduation from the University of Kansas, Bill Bunten joined the Maines, a choichoice he says was fairly easy.
"I was afraid of heights and couldn't remember details so the Air Force wasn't for me. The man pointed me to the Marine's door.

After serving America in places such as Japan and demilitarized zones in Korea, he returned to Topeka and married JoAnn Bunten in the winter of 1962. That same year Bunten caught the itch for politics.

He said, "I was complaining about things enough that I just decided to run and I did run and I won, and I continued to run campaigns for 28 years."

He'd later add two years in the State Senate, and, on his 75th birthday on April 5th of 2005, he was elected to the first of two terms as Topeka's Mayor.

Reflecting on his tenure, Bunten said, " I love the people of this city. I wanted to run to clean up the city and make it safe and we are progressing towards all that."

Larry Wolgast will be sworn in as Topeka's Mayor, and new Council Members also will take their oaths at Tuesday night's meeting.
