TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley Deiter announced that in the afternoon of the election, she relieved a voting place Supervising Judge of her duties for failure to give out the correct ballots. This is the first time in twenty years that the Election Commissioner has experienced this situation.

A morning phone call to the election office reported a potential problem of an incorrect ballot being handed to a voter at the Light of the World Christian Church, 3301 SW Gage Blvd. After an extensive discussion with the Supervising Judge, an election official was dispatched from the office to the voting place. The election official observed the action in the voting place, heard the board worker tell the Supervising Judge which ballots to give and observed the correct ballots on the table. It appeared that the correct ballots were being handed out and the situation was resolved.

In the afternoon, the Election Commissioner visited the voting place and discovered that the supervising judge was not following the protocol that she had been taught, and was not giving some of the voters the correct ballot. Ensley Deiter intervened at that point, insisted that the board workers follow the procedures from their training school, relieved the Supervising Judge of her position and appointed another election worker in her place. Ensley Deiter believes that only a portion of the ballots were affected.

The races affected are those for the state House of Representatives, 52nd and 56th districts and the Ward 12 Precinct 8 and Ward 12 Precinct 9 precinct committee officials. She stressed it does not affect any of the other races including the County Commission or State Senate races since those were the same on both precinct’s
ballots.

Election Commissioner Ensley Deiter says her office is reviewing the poll book to determine the total number of ballots involved. Additional information will be released when that process is completed.
