TOPEKA, Kan. -- Individuals planning to run for city council this spring, or perhaps in the future, are encouraged to attend the 2013 Candidate School which will be offered January 24 from 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and February 28 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Both sessions will be in the Marvin Auditorium at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW Tenth Avenue.

The first session will cover candidate regulations, filing appropriate paperwork and financial records, election information, how to get your message out and raising funds. Former mayor and city council members will discuss what serving as a local public official entails, sharing their experiences. City Manager Jim Colson will provide information on Topeka’s form of government, council responsibilities and issues facing the new City Council. The first session is open to the public and there is no cost.

The second session is designed for candidates who have won their primary and will be on the general election ballot. Topics include: responding to the public and constituents, getting your message out, open meetings rules, Roberts Rules of Order and tips on working together, building consensus and weathering controversy. Participants will need to register for the second session by calling 785-580-4540; there is no cost for this session.

Candidate School is offered to help prepare individuals for a campaign for mayor or city council; participants are not endorsed by any of the organizations or individuals involved in presenting the workshop. The meetings are open to the public and there is no cost for either session.
