TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Governor Sam Brownback presented checks to two local school districts for their work in helping students succeed in the Career and Technical Education program.

The program, signed into law last year, covers a high school student's tuition cost so they can take college level technical courses. It also rewards schools with money for each of their students that earn a certificate in a technical occupation.

Dr. Marty Stressman, Shawnee Heights School District Superintendent, was there to accept a $16,000 check from the Governor.

Washburn Rural High School Principal Ed Raines as well as three students accepted a $13,000 check on behalf of the Auburn-Washburn School District.

Almost 5,800 junior and senior students took the technical courses this year, resulting in a 50% increase in headcount compared to last year.
