TOPEKA, Kan/ (WIBW) -- A Topeka City Councilman facing two felony charges entered into a diversion agreement.

Last month, District 2 representative John Campos was charged with making a false writing and interfering with the judicial process. Under the agreement, which was filed on Tuesday, prosecutors agreed to put the case on hold for 12 months.

Even with the deal, Shawnee Co. District Attorney Chad Taylor plans to move ahead with his petition to suspend Campos from office. A hearing for that is set for May 12.

The criminal complaint against Campos says he brought a falsified insurance card to the city's legal department after he was stopped for speeding a few days earlier.

During that time, Campos must file monthly reports with the district attorney's office, not violate any laws, and pay fines and fees totaling $438.

He also agreed with the facts of the case, including that he did not have insurance on his vehicle when he was stopped. If he complies with the agreement, the case will be dismissed with prejudice.
