TOPEKA, Kan. -- Shawnee County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley Deiter announced Friday that she is expecting a lower than average turnout for the upcoming primary election.

The average turnout for an August Primary in a Presidential year is 34%. She is predicting a 31% voter turnout in Shawnee County for the Primary Election being held Tuesday, August 7th.

Advance Voting activity this year is running neck and neck with that of 2008 for the same time period. The overall voter turnout for 2008 was 31.3% in Shawnee County.

The number of advanced ballot requested to date this year is 4,439 compared to 4,445 in 2008. The number of returned advanced ballots this year is slightly ahead of 2008 at 2,999 ballots compared to 2,877 in 2008.

Commissioner Ensley Deiter is also reminding Shawnee County voters to pay particular attention to their voting place this election as many voting places have been consolidated. The number of polling locations decreased from 156 buildings last year to 100 for the upcoming primary election. The purpose of the consolidation is to save Shawnee County taxpayers money which is estimated to be $30,000 this election alone.

Voters may see some lines at the polls during the busiest times between the hours of 7:00 am. and 8:00 a.m. and between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Commissioner Ensley Deiter expects lines to move more quickly through a more efficient use of poll workers and a shorter ballot for this primary election.

Voters who have questions regarding their polling place may call the Election Office at 266-0285 or visit the Elections Office website at www.snco.us/election.
