TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Incumbent Republican State Senator Vicki Schmidt pulled away with the hotly contested 20th District primary Senate race, beating Rep. Joe Patton 51 to 49 percent.
The two-term senator outspent Patton. Her supporters, family and friends welcomed her to a watch party at her Topeka home on Tuesday night (7/7). They watched the results come in, and as the votes were counted, Schmidt kept a small but steady lead.
Patton spent his watch party with friends, family and volunteers. He thanked him for their time and dedication to his campaign.
The end of the primary race begins one against Democrat Terry Crowder. Crowder says funding education will be a stop issue come November, but he says he's really a fan of Schmidt. He says she's a moderate Republican that can compromise with those across the aisle.
