Obama, Romney Campaigns To Suspend Advertising On 9/11

(CNN) -- The campaigns of President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney will not run television commercials on September 11 this year, spokespeople for the campaigns confirmed Thursday evening.

In 2008, candidates Obama and Sen. John McCain paused their campaigns on September 11 and jointly visited Ground Zero in New York City in commemoration of the 2001 attacks.

While in New York earlier this year, Obama visited the site of One World Trade Center and signed a beam which was recently installed in the tower.

In April, Romney and Rudy Giuliani, who was mayor of New York City at the time of the attacks, marked the one-year anniversary of the 2011 raid which killed Osama bin Laden by delivering pizzas to New York Engine Company 24, which played a central role in the 9/11 response.

The campaign ad suspension was first reported by The New York Times.
