TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas House members are showing signs of budging in talks over proposed income tax cuts.
Three senators and three House members resumed negotiations Wednesday over tax reductions. They're trying to draft an alternative to an aggressive package of cuts that cleared the Legislature last week.
That plan cuts individual income tax rates and exempts 191,000 businesses from income taxes. Legislative researchers predict the cuts would create a budget shortfall approaching $2.5 billion by July 2018.
A less aggressive plan had emerged previously from tax negotiations, but senators were cool to it, and conservatives pushed the more aggressive plan to passage to force senators' hand.
House negotiators had said they wouldn't go for a plan with smaller tax reductions, but they offered new concessions Wednesday.
