TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Education, taxes and clean campaigns surfaced as issues in one Republican Primary race.

Joe Patton and incumbent Senator Vicki Schmidt went head to head at Brewster Place where over fifty people turned out to hear the two candidates running to represent Topeka's 20th State Senate District.

Patton stuck to his views on the importance of creating Kansas jobs and keeping educated Kansans in state after graduation instead of looking for jobs elsewhere.

Schmidt stated she is cautious about the new tax reform bill signed by Governor Brownback and she believes they should focus on the state's property taxes.

Patton said "I supported a tax reform bill that lowered taxes for everybody and created jobs, and in this environment, what we need is jobs."

Schmidt believes her track record speaks for itself, saying "I listen to my constituents and i'm responsive to them and building relationships with them is what it is all about. I'm gonna run on my record and i'm proud of my record and we will see what happens."

Schmidt also asked Patton to sign a pledge to run a clean campain and he refused.

Vicki Schmidt has served in the Senate since 2005 when she beat Joe Patton for the position. This year's Primary Election is August 7th.
