Democrats Frown Upon New Tax Deal Supported By GOP

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)___ State Democratic Party Chair Joan Wagnon was not so eager to jump to excitement once the Kansas Legislature passed the State tax bill early Sunday morning after 99 days in session. While Governor Sam Brownback sees the new tax bill as an obvious tax cut. Wagnon says it is far from that.

In a written staten, Wagnon said, " I am astounded that after all the efforts to cut taxes this legislative session, the best they could come up with was a $771 million tax INCREASE! Instead of letting your sales tax rate drop to 5.7% as was promised, this Governor and his allies in the legislature have fiddles with almost every part of the income tax code and the sales tax and are trying to make you believe you got a tax cut. Well don't you believe it! Your income tax rates will actually rise before dropping again. Your sales tax rate isn't going down as promised. Single parents and middle income tax payers will bear the brunt of a tax increase so the wealthy will get a tax cut. I have never seen such irresponsible actions by an elected body: Broken promises, and a $771 million tax increase. Kansas can't take much more of this kind of leadership!"
