(WIBW) - A Kansas Congressman congratulated high schoolers in his district for making their voices heard in the debate over new school lunch guidelines.

Students from Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs, Kan. produced a parody video called "We Are Hungry" and posted it on YouTube. As of Wednesday, Oct. 10, it had more than 959,000 views.

In an accompanying message, the students write that, while they enjoy having more fresh fruit and vegetables, they have a problem with a one-size-fits-all program that does not meet the needs of average students in their school. They include contact information for Undersecretary of Food & Nutrition Services Kevin Concannon and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp visited the school Wednesday and met with the students behind the video. Huelskamp is co-sponsoring the “No Hungry Kids Act” to undo the mandates that took effect this school year.

“I am so honored and proud to represent Sharon Springs students and their teachers in Congress,” Huelskamp said in a statement. “They refuse to let a top-down, heavy-handed federal government dictate what should be a day-to-day local decision: what goes on to the cafeteria tray. At a very young age, these students are learning first-hand the consequences of what happens when government becomes too powerful. But, they are also learning about the power of activism, and how an average person can transform a debate and influence public policy."
