TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Senator Pat Roberts says he's concerned that the state party's new loyalty committee might hurt the image of Republicans.

Roberts says he doesn't blame party leaders who formed the committee, because their goal is to make sure party officers don't
back non-Republicans. But he's worried that it might be perceived
as creating a loyalty test.

Party Chairman Kris Kobach says the aim is to keep party officers - such as county chairmen and members of precinct committees - from endorsing or giving money to Democrats.

Roberts says the committee is to reassure GOP candidates that they will have solid backing from party leaders, but that's not the message that has gone out.
