2 Topeka House Candidates Remain On Ballot

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A pair of Topeka legislative candidates lost their bids to keep opponents off the ballot.

They were among 10 cases the State Objections Board heard Tuesday.

In the 52nd Kansas House district, William Scott Hesse argued Secretary of State Kris Kobach did not have authority to assign Dr. Shanti Gandhi to the correct district after federal judges redrew political boundaries.

Topeka City Councilman John Alcala made the same argument with his opponent in the 57th district, Aimee Rosenow.

In both cases, the board ruled the office acted within its authority. The office shifted more than 80 candidates in all due to the boundary changes.

In another case, the board rejected the claim of Democrat Larry Meeker, who said the Secretary of State's Office lost his paperwork. He says he'll campaign as a writein.

Also of interest, House Majority Leader Arlen Siegfreid will not face a primary challenge from Rep. Mike Kiegerl. The new boundaries put them in the same district, but Kiegerl did not meet the deadline ot take his name off the ballot, to avoid running against his ally. The board granted Siegfreid's request to do so, with Kiegerl's support.

The board also rejected a challenge to Rep. Jan Pauls' candidacy. Tom Witt, executive director of the Kansas Equality Coalition, said Pauls, a conservative Democrat, did not actually live at a former church she lists as her new address.

Pauls said she has made the former church her home because her previous residence was drawn into another district during the state's political redistricting process.

The board is comprised of Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
