TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Democratic Senate candidate Jim Slattery is proposing a one-year moratorium on funding earmarks in budget
Slattery outlined a proposal Friday for addressing earmarks, which set aside money in the federal budget for specific projects.
Slattery says the practice of using earmarks has gotten out of hand and helped balloon the federal budget deficit. He says a moratorium will give Congress a chance to reform the budgeting process.
The former congressman is running against Republican Senator Pat Roberts.
Roberts spokeswoman Molly Haase says Slattery's proposals
are redundant. She noted that Roberts discloses the earmarks he has
obtained for projects in Kansas.
