Their ads already focused on each other. Tuesday's primary made it official - Jim Slattery is the Democrat who will try to unseat incumbent Republican Senator Pat Roberts.

Slattery easily defeated Lee Jones in the primary election.

Slattery laid out his priorities to supporters gathered at the Ramada Inn Tuesday night.

"I will work to lower the price of gas, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and establish a comprehensive energy policy. I will work to balance the budget, reduce the deficit, and trim pork barrel spending. I will work to end the war in Iraq, refocus our efforts on the war on terror and finding Osama bin Laden, and restore stability in the Middle East," Slattery said. "I will work to lower the cost of health care, improve the availability of health insurance, and allow Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs."

Roberts spent the evening with family members. In a statement, he said he looks forward to the campaign.

“I will not spend one dime more than necessary, but I will spend enough to remind the voters of our successes and achievements, partnerships with Kansans, and I reserve the right to set the record straight," Roberts said. “The Senate schedule will necessarily dominate my time as we try to pass a realistic and comprehensive energy bill, extend current tax relief and hopefully make progress on the appropriations bills important to Kansas. Otherwise, I am eager to be on the campaign trail as I am close to completing my regular 105 county listening tour across the state this month."
