Senate Committee Advances Budget Bills

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Senate committee has endorsed a proposed
$13.4 billion budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

The Ways and Means Committee's spending plan is less generous than one proposed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. It also leaves some important issues unresolved.

The committee endorsed three bills containing the budget on identical 7-2 votes. Its actions sent the measures to the Senate, which is expected to debate them next week.

The House already has approved its own proposed budget. The final version will be drafted by negotiators for the two chambers. But lawmakers will draft another spending measure to wrap up the
budget.

The Senate committee's budget proposes an overall spending increase of 2.5 percent, or about $325 million.
