TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Senate has rejected a proposal to stop the state from paying sales tax on materials used in renovating the Statehouse.

Supporters say the measure would lower the cost of the 11-year
renovation project. It's now expected to cost about $285 million. The state already has paid about $7 million in state and local sales taxes.

But critics say the proposal would cost Shawnee County much-needed revenues. They also say the Legislature should set a consistent tax policy and not single out any one project.

The proposal was offered as an amendment to a tax bill. Senators rejected it on a voice vote and then gave the bill first-round approval.
