TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ House members returning for the start of the annual legislative session found themselves with a newly redecorated chamber.
It's the latest part of the ongoing, $285 million renovation of the Statehouse to be completed. The project began in 2001, and workers expect to finish it in 2011.
Statehouse architect Barry Greis said the goal was to make the chamber look more like it did when the west wing of the Statehouse was finished, in the early 1880s. That meant giving the chamber new chandeliers and lighting fixtures, and new carpet, made in South Africa.
But the state also spent more than $1 million to upgrade the systems used to track and display how legislators vote.
