Sen. Schmidt Suggests Efficiency Comm.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A legislative leader is proposing that the state create a seven-member commission to pursue inefficiencies in government.

Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt says his commission would be modeled upon a federal commission that designates military bases to be closed.

Under his plan, the commission's proposals for making government more efficient automatically would receive an up-or-down vote in the Legislature. He argues such a system will make efficiencies more likely to happen.

Schmidt, an Independence Republican, announced his proposal Monday, four days after Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat, announced that she was launching a renewed effort to find efficiencies.
