WACO, Texas (KWTX) -- While Thanksgiving brings family and friends together for a traditional turkey and dressing meal, it’s typically also one of busiest times of the year for area plumbers, according to the owner of one Waco company who says his employees expect to be called out on the holiday.
“We do have a little bit on Thanksgiving of a hair that broke the camel's back so to speak,” George Harmon, the owner of Mr. Rooter of Central Texas, says.
“It’s really not that particular day it's just that was the day that the problem raised its head,” he said.
“Everybody thinks Thanksgiving is the big problem, they think it's the turkey, they think it's the bones, they think it's everything in the garbage disposal, but typically it's a result of the system not being properly taken care of throughout the year,” he said.
Typically, residents have more people in their homes, more food on the table, and more to put down the garbage disposal, which eventually clogs the system and causes backups, he said.
Residents can avoid some of the major problems by cleaning out their bathtub and sink drains of excess hair and debris, and not treat the garbage disposal as a trashcan, he said.
He said his employees don’t get upset about being called out on the holiday.
“Typically my guys will leave with a piece of pie or a piece of cake or some type of food in their pocket and they like that,” he said.
