Valley Falls Marine To Receive Purple Heart

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Local marine and Valley Falls native, Shane Evans will be honored Monday with the Purple Heart medal in Kansas City for his four year service in Afghanistan.

Evans was stationed at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune,in North Carolina and was deployed with Combat Logistics Battalion 2 in Sangin, Afghanistan.

The combat engineer Shane Evans joined the Marine Corps on a whim at a recruiting substation in Topeka.

On August 26, 2010 his group was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device during operations.

"We hit the plate and got blown up. I remember a boom and then and I couldn't hear much but that's all I remember," said Shane.

The soon to be married father of two, suffered a traumatic brain injury which damaged his short term memory. His speech wasn't the same for a month and recovery from the Talibans I.E.D took nearly a year.

Shane doesnt feel more accomplished than other miltary member and he is quick to point out that everyone serving, takes similar risks. He is just happy to be back home with his Fiancee and two children.

Shane said, "Now that I am alright and recovered and can lead a normal life and be with my family, its a great honor."

Shane also mentioned he has plans of potentially going back to school for an Engineering Degree at Kansas University.
