(CNN) -- Mitt Romney's campaign, along with the Republican National Committee, raised $170 million in September, the campaign announced Monday.

The number comes more than a week after President Barack Obama's team said they raised a record $181 million for the president's re-election effort.

Romney's campaign said it finished the month with $191 million in the bank. Ninety-three percent of all donations were $250 or less, amounting to $43.15 million of the September haul, the campaign added.

"President Obama has demonstrated that he can't defend his record of four years of failure," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a much different vision than President Obama's policies of larger government, a stagnant economy, and more government dependence.

In August, the collective effort known as the Romney Victory Fund, which also includes state parties, raised $112 million. In the two months prior, the team raised just over $100 million each month.

Romney officially accepted his party's nomination on August 30 in a speech that concluded the Republican National Convention. September kicked off with the Democratic National Convention, a week full of prime time speeches targeting GOP policies while also bolstering the president's re-election effort.

The GOP nominee's $170 million haul came in before Romney's widely proclaimed win in the first presidential debate, which essentially changed the tone in the campaign.

And the GOP nominee's numbers come in spite of what many political observers noted as a difficult month of September for Romney. The candidate faced negative headlines after video emerged of the Republican making controversial remarks at a private fund-raiser in May. In his comments, Romney argued half the country was dependent on government and viewed themselves as victims. They story dominated the news cycle for much of the week.
