Washington (CNN) - Americans are pessimistic about the current state of the economy, but optimistic about what things will look like a year from now, according to a new poll.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released Tuesday also indicates that a majority believe President Barack Obama will beat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in November's general election.

Seventy-one percent of people questioned rate the current economic conditions as poor, but 58% say those conditions will be good a year from now.

According to the poll, regardless of which candidate they support, 56% say that Obama will win re-election, with 36% saying that Romney will come out on top in November.

The survey indicates that Romney's favorable rating has jumped to 50%, with his unfavorable rating down to 41%. By a 52% to 46% margin, the president has a favorable rating.

Fifty-five percent say the economy would get better over the next four years if Romney were elected president, with 46% saying the economy would improve if Obama was re-elected.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday (May 10-13), with 1,012 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.
