(CNN) - For the second straight week, a new survey in New York indicates Mitt Romney lapping the field in advance of the Empire State's April 24th Republican presidential primary.

According to a Siena College Research Institute poll released Tuesday, 51% of likely GOP primary voters say they back Romney for their party's presidential nomination, with 18% supporting former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, 11% backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and 6% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, is the overwhelming front runner and all but certain nominee in the Republican race.

"As the Republican Party leadership has rallied behind Romney, so too it appears, have Republican voters in New York," said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. "Romney has extended the 15-point lead over Santorum he held last month to a now nearly three-to-one 33-point lead."

Last week a Quinnipiac University Poll in New York indicated Romney at 54%, with Santorum at 21%, Gingrich at 9% and Paul at 8%.

New York joins neighboring Connecticut and Pennsylvania, as well as Delaware and Rhode Island, in holding primaries in two weeks.

While Romney is the overwhelming favorite in the GOP primary, the poll indicates President Barack Obama with a 25 point lead over Romney in a probable general election matchup in New York, which the Republicans last carried in a presidential election in 1984.

The Siena College poll was conducted April 1-4, with 808 registered voters in New York state questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 6.6 percentage points for GOP primary questions.
