Eyewitnesses from another car on the interstate during the deadly crash provide insight into the incident.

A FedEx truck crossed a median and slammed head-on into a bus carrying students in Northern California, killing 10 people, authorities said Friday. The collision Thursday evening killed both drivers, five students and three chaperones, said Lt. Bruce Carpenter with the California Highway Patrol.

(CBS) -- A new eyewitness account is upending theories of what caused a terrible highway crash in California.

In an exclusive interview with CBS Sacramento station KOVR-TV, Bonnie and Joe Duran indicated a FedEx truck may have had mechanical trouble before it struck a bus carrying a group of students. Bonnie said, "I looked over and saw the FedEx truck coming straight for me, and he was in flames already."

The FedEx truck was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 when it veered across the median through some bushes and into the northbound lanes. The truck clipped the Durans' rental car before hitting the bus Thursday night in Orland, Calif.

The Durans are lucky to be alive after barely avoiding the fiery crash. After seeing the truck crash into the bus, the couple was apprehensive if there would be survivors. "It was so scary. We were wondering if anyone was gonna get out of there alive," said Bonnie.

But amazingly, there were more than 30 survivors on the bus, which was taking underprivileged, high-achieving students to visit Humboldt State University.

Ten people did not make it out alive. Among the confirmed dead are student Marisa Serrato, college counselor Arthur Arzola and chaperone Michael Myvett. His fiancee, Mattison Haywood, is missing. Also, four students are listed as missing. They are Adrian Castro, Jennifer Bonilla, Denise Gomez and Ismael Jimenez.
