(CBS/AP)-- A bus plowed into a home in Hempstead, New York Tuesday evening, killing a 6-year-old boy who was sleeping in the bedroom, CBS Station WCBS New York reported Wednesday.

According to investigators, the driver of a Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) bus, which had the green light, was going west on Fulton Avenue when he witnessed a pedestrian in the bus' path.

Police say the driver honked the horn but the person didn't get out of the bus' path. The driver swerved the bus to avoid a collision with the pedestrian, jumped a curb and crashed into a home where 6-year-old David Granados and his 7-year-old brother was sleeping in their room.

The two boys were transported to Winthrop Hospital where David Granados died; his brother suffered injuries to his arm.

"They were asleep in the bed and the bus came in," Alida Gutierrez, who lived in the home, told WCBS 880, and added that the bus missed her daughter by inches.

Several passengers who were on the bus went to nearby hospitals for minor injuries, according to police.

On Wednesday morning, investigators, who believed the crash was an accident, removed the bus from the home.

"Preliminarily, alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be a factor regarding the driver of the NICE bus," Nassau County police spokesman Inspector Kenneth Lack had said.
