Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says a Westwind II aircraft was trying to depart Huntsville International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- Huntsville police are reporting a small aircraft crash near Huntsville International Airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says a Westwind II aircraft was trying to depart Huntsville International Airport Wednesday afternoon. Bergen says the plane caught fire with three people on board, but was unsure of the plane's destination.

At a 4 p.m. press conference, Karen Yarbrough, acting PR manager for Huntsville, said the three passengers on the plane all lost their lives.

At least one flight has been diverted from landing at the airport, according to Huntsville International Airport's website.

Authorities ask that you avoid the area and all entrances to the airport. County Line Road is closed while crews work the scene.
