(CNN) -- A pilot was killed as two small planes collided in the air above Fauquier County, Virginia, on Monday, the FAA and Virginia State Police told CNN.
The crash happened about five miles south of the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport around 4 p.m.
"One plane has been destroyed by fire and the pilot is confirmed deceased," Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told CNN. "The pilot of the second plane has been transported to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg."
The second plane, a PA28, landed safely, according to the FAA.
The crash scene is secluded and difficult to access, state police said.
As to what caused the crash, "that remains under investigation at this time" they added.
